Kathleen’s Psychic Ezine
“What is the Heirophant?”, clients often ask when he turns up in a reading. Heirophant is an ancient Greek term which refers to someone who interprets religious mysteries. He translates imprecisely to priest in modern English.
The Heirophant is a supporter of the ancient practices of inherited, imperial hierarchy. He represents that part of ourselves that lazily swallows whole the guidelines of tradition. Because they have always been, the reasoning goes, they must be right, good, and best of all, easy.
In classical Tarot meaning, The Heirophant card represents an adopted morality. Best practices according to a prescribed, formal religious treatise. Making commitments and adhering to them no matter how inconvenient or painful that may be. Words like pledge, promise, commitment, discipline and sacrifice are in accordance with the Heirophant. Teacher, tradition, classicism, and judgement are also key words.
The Heirophant from a Feminist Perspective
The Heirophant in its classic meaning and position within the Tarot has been described as a misogynistic figure by feminist Tarot interpreters like Vicki Noble and they always change his name and sex. Vicki in her Motherpeace Tarot, changed HIM to the female Crone. A handle I prefer and celebrate more every passing year, for obvious reasons.
The traditional religious overtones dominate the meaning of The Heirophant who stands for a patriarchal religious order that staunchly refuses to acknowledge that women have equally strong spiritual, leadership qualities. The Heirophant burned 9 million women in the middle ages for being witches. He strictly dictates laws laid down in ancient religious writings which are rife with anti-feminine sentiment. If you’ve ever read anything by St. Augustine about the “weaker sex”, you’ll be familiar with this drift.
The Emperor and the Heirophant
The Hierophant is number 5 in the major arcana Tarot, following the Emperor in number 4. The Emperor rules absolutely, imperially and the Heirophant always has his back. He will lead the flock, with the heavy-weight of God’s will in his gavel, to follow the dictates of the Emperor without question or protest. The Emperor looks to him for support, guidance and backing and in turn provides the Heirophant with a cushy and safe abode from which to conduct his work.
These two cards together suggest the client is scraping against patriarchy, prompting questions like,
“How are you being bullied into going along with the status quo?”
“How are you following rules by rote rather than choice?”
“Why are you feeling guilty for rebelling?”
“What might this contract or commitment mean in the future knowing you will have to muscle through it regardless of how much of a sacrifice may be demanded?”
If you are learning and/or teaching moral guidance from a traditional, status-quo perspective, you are in a heir-archal place. Now is the time to question whether you are doing what you soulfully believe is right or are you going along with a tradition that has lost its lustre.
The Year 2021 Ahead
I love January for nudging me to ponder what I’ve learned over the past year and how I might chase opportunities to apply those insights. A more intuitive process and one the Crone would enthusiastically endorse. I’ve committed 2021 to include a daily, spiritual morning read. Selecting one of Cora’s books, I read a page or two and ponder its deeper meaning which may include a journal entry. I’m presently re-reading The Soul: in human Embodiments which I heartily recommend if you’re looking for a unique spiritual book to sink your teeth into.
This may be the year to discover and work with your own spiritual guide; learning and applying their teachings into your everyday lives.
Go where your heart leads you: Invite those who share your enthusiasm, be as positive as you can be and celebrate the simple pleasures that bring you peace and joy. Show up for yourself and furthermore: Be mindful how you talk to yourself, remember you’re listening. Make this your 2021 kō′än.
“In ordinary lives, deeper subjects sometimes take possession and there begins this line of reminiscence, which, however, relates to the deeper consciousness, and which is very wisely veiled from the ordinary vision: since if people were busily engaged in remembering what they were, they would not fulfill the present duties and objects of life. There is just sufficient of reminiscence in the world to offer as proof when any teaching is distinctly on that subject. Taking the whole world, and the whole human history, the evidence of reminiscence are as complete and as numerous as any other factor in human life.”
