August is the Astrological Sign Leo and the Strength Tarot Card

The authentic personal power accessible to us when we balance self-discipline and self-awareness are evident in the Strength card which is the Tarot card for August. To grasp the meaning of this card, Pamela Coleman Smith under Waite’s strict direction, painted a young woman opening the mouth of a male lion and bending forward looking down on its head. She symbolizes bravery, loving focus and confidence. The lion looks up at her, trusting her touch and giving his power over to her will. When this card is turned over in a reading, it means that in facing your challenges ahead, be confident, and fiercely self-controlled. If you mess up, the consequences could be deadly.

Taking pride in their tribe, those born under the sign of Leo are the Ambassadors (think Barak Obama) of the zodiac. Leos appear in opposite personality types. The gregarious, life of the party Leo is typically situated at the centre of a group telling jokes, dancing, playing an instrument and singing. There is a special electrical charge when they grace a social gathering. They enchant, amuse, and inspire.

The other Leo appears as the shy Lion. Quiet-spoken, self-effacing and if you’re fortunate to be the chosen chat partner, a delightful person to converse with. No matter what outer manifestation their personality exhibits, all Leos inherently know they are the best. Sporting a mane of lush locks that you can’t help but notice, everyone vies for their smile.

I’ve never met a Leo who didn’t love music. Putting on costumes, dancing, leading a sing-a-long – probably a Leo. Most of us have at least one Leo friend or lover because Leos tend to have a bevy of friends and lovers. But beware! They can be fiercely competitive, envious and vain. In a temper, they’re fearsome indeed. That’s when all the shouting, shattering and scattering starts. Leos are heart breakers. When they give you the cold shoulder, you’ll cry for weeks. Heaven help you if you fall in love with one.

The Dark Side of the Strength Tarot Card

As Jung would say, however, the brighter the light, the darker the shadow. Naturally the opposite of the Strength card is weakness and lethargy. We feel old beyond our natural years. We feel weak, passive and hopeless. The dark side of the Strength card represents a disconnect from our physical bodies. Your confidence stepping ahead is flagging. You could falter at just the wrong moment. Losing your stride now will have long-ranging consequences that may result in dependency, illness and lack of resources.

August is the Month of Wistfulness

When we turn our calendars to August, our first thought is typically, “Summer is approaching its end”. There’s a bite in the morning and evening air by mid-month. The Sun arises later and sets earlier. There’s a frenetic energy by the end of the month as we hop to capture these last vestiges of summer whist preparing for all that September brings. Memories of returning to school after the lazy days of summer, fall harvest, and other preparation for the cooler weather ahead.

The word “august” means distinguished, elegant, illustrious, prestigious, renowned, and exalted. As a month, it’s all those things. A special month to be appreciated especially at the bounty it brings us. I wish you a lovely one wherever in the world you are celebrating its gifts.
