I can feel the holiday electric vibration permeating the air.
December is a month for nostalgia, isn’t it? Not that I need nudging in that direction these days. Aging presents us with an ever increasing, reminiscing mind that can and often does, trot down the lanes of olden days. Some memories hold a delightful promise of pleasure, joy and anticipation. Others not so much.
My memories of holiday seasons are equally balanced between joy and dread. I’m sure that’s true for many, at least for most I speak with at this time of year. The visuals of sparkly lights, and ornamentation. All the shiny things. Rousing choirs, bands playing old familiar tunes, bells ringing and laughter amid the clinking of toasting glasses. Rare, exotic food and drink, games and gift giving all twig memories of holidays gone past. Sprinkled throughout, however, is the equally, horrifying memories of rageful fights, frustrations, disappointments, drunkenness, and wondering when we might sneak away to be with friends, skating or tobogganing. It’s a heady mix of sentimentality, sensual overload and dread. It’s taken me years to glide through the season feeling cheerful, grateful and for the most part, serene.
Even if you opt out of most things Christmassy, you’ll be inundated with the collective energies that are constellated in December. Whenever we venture amid the maddening crowd for a bit of task shopping, I can feel the holiday electric vibration permeating the air. One plagued with anxiety, anticipation and a sort of, “We’ve got this! The new year is soon here!” vibe.
These past few years have certainly impacted on most positive attempts to make the season holly jolly. This year people are stressed about the cost of living, job security and the sense of another pandemic lurking around every corner poised to leap out with another long siege and battle cry.
Stress and Disappointment
This stress tends to dampen whatever joy, charity and renewal we might feel. The strain of the financial and social-pretense pressures drives many to be neglectful and sometimes even cruel to their bodies, families, friends and neighbours.
The holiday season presents a unique opportunity, however, to practice all those stress reducing practices we know we should do but ignore at that moment we need them most!
If nothing else, build in contemplative time to do simple, normal things with those you delight in being with. Get plenty of rest and eat green food. Ideally intend to navigate the season, as much as possible, alcohol-free. If you are alone and don’t want to be, consider volunteering at a charitable Christmas dinner. This is a generous way to share the season with others, be rewarded in the spirit of giving and feel connected to something larger than yourself.
If that isn’t possible, head out for a walk in your local park and seize the opportunity to chat with others, especially those elderly folk that you see walking alone. This time of year for the elderly living on a meagrely pension who have lost their partners, is truly horrific. A friendly hello can make an enormous difference in their quality of life right now.
We’ll experience Winter Solstice on Wednesday December 21st, which in the northern hemisphere translates to the shortest day of the year. In the Tarot, the Winter Solstice is represented by the Sun card which depicts the birth of the twin gods of the solar cycle. The Sun is born from the dark womb of the darkest night in the year, and on that day the hours of sunlight begin to lengthen, and the power and strength of the sun is reborn.
It’s the month for Sagittarians who love adventure, learning, hard work and being a part of something much bigger than themselves and Capricorns who are undoubtedly in desperate need of a rest and an excuse to lighten up. Being such a hard working, serious bunch.
Rich with Tradition, Ritual, Indulgence & Connection
The best aspect of the Christmas season is the fact that people do unusual and rare things in December! We connect with friends whom we seldom take the time to connect with; we buy odd and weird stuff; we take holidays and celebrate years’ end. It’s a joyful, painful, exhilarating, depressing and spiritual time for billions of the faithful around the world. In the grand scheme of things, it’s the occasion to step outside your normal habits and inclinations. Try something different and challenge yourself to be kind to someone everyday even if it’s just a phone call to say, “Hi! Hope everything is good with you!”
I wish you a peaceful and joyful holiday season! Be safe, healthy and mindful.
A reminder that I do provide e-Gift Certificates which have always been an amazing and appreciated present to receive. At least according to the recipients of the Gift Certificates that I do readings for in the New Year. Unique and alluring, it’s a Gift that keeps on giving since predictions are something the recipient will remember for many years to come.
If you have someone you’ve forgotten to buy for or just didn’t know what on earth to get them since they seem to have everything, the Gift of a Tarot Reading will be the present they talk about to friends and family about the most.
I wish you and your loved ones a holiday season lush with delightful and delicious treats and moments to cherish for a lifetime.
Blessings Kathleen

“Out of all the experts I’ve spoke to you’ve been the absolute best. His roommate I saw posted a lot about having avoidant personality, and my hurt comes from feeling bad I didn’t understand that and him like she does; but now I do.
