Jung and Psychic Ability as Instrument of Healing for Patients

As I was being interviewed by a young writer from Ottawa recently, I pondered what psychic ability is, relative to modernity.

Until the early 20th century, most in the west believed psychic ability was an aberration. A potential pact with The Devil. Millions were persecuted/murdered for it.

Psychic Insight Not Likely Connected to Evil Spirits

Scientific inquiry has applied its tools to psychic phenomena and its relationship to our physical, mental and emotional states and most people today are open to the notion that having psychic insight is not that unusual! Not likely connected to evil spirits either.

For example, research into different states of consciousness has revealed a brain-wave pattern that exists between the states of wakefulness and sleeping. Known as the alpha state, it is characterized as restful awareness. A right-brained function which is classically associated with communication. Although it can be induced through meditation techniques, we all experience this state before falling asleep or upon awakening. Sometimes referred to as the “hypnogogic” state. We can draw upon the suggestiveness of the hypnogogic state for example, by visualizing future events we wish to attract. Doctors formulated a new language to describe this mind power such as biofeedback and the relaxation response.

The most surprising and serendipitous aspect of the alpha state to science was its relationship to accessing information beyond our physical bodies. This led to studies in the development and use of remote viewing whereby individuals who scored high on the psychic ability test were trained to picture places in their minds and describe what was happening there from the comfort of a lab thousands of miles away. Unsurprisingly, spycraft has put this talent to use.

Freud Hypnotized Patents to Reclaim Buried Memories

Psychoanalysis has been engaging this alpha state through the use of hypnosis since Sigmund Freud. Freud hypnotized patients to facilitate the reclaiming of buried memories from the deep unconscious mind. The earliest memories such as being in the womb, birth, and toilet training are examples of what can be reclaimed through hypnosis.

One psychoanalyst while working with a client who had been menstrual bleeding non-stop for years said to her as she was leaving her the first session that her bleeding would stop NOW that they would be commencing analysis. It promptly did much to the shock of the client! The unconscious mind is susceptible to the power of suggestion as this example highlights.

Carl Jung took this a step further when he postulated the existence of a collective unconscious which he described as a deep level of mind where we all share common information and memories. Knowledge in this deeper layer of consciousness takes the form of symbols and archetypes, which is also evident in mythology and religion. The collective unconscious provides a mechanism by which one person (ie. a psychic) may acquire information about another. Jung often admonished training therapists to remain open minded in the face of extraordinary psychic events. He’d had enough experience with it to know deep insight can be revealed through a psychic and spiritual connection between therapist and client.

Mystics have written about the Akashic records which are thought to include all knowledge – past, present and future. This cosmic database of information exists on a spiritual plane and is the mechanism by which spirit guides can access information relevant to us. The parallels between the Akashic records and Jung’s collective unconscious are unmistakable, especially since both are reached through processes involving the right hemisphere of the brain.

Self-Hypnosis and Dying on the Operating Table

I remember my mother describing her last dabbling in self hypnosis whereby she realized she was looking at herself from the upper corner of the room. She saw herself clearly lying in her bath from a vantage point impossible to achieve physically. The experience frightened her so profoundly she never tried it again (sadly!). A friend of mine many years ago while under anaesthetic awoke to see herself lying on the operating table.

In a panic, she raced along the hospital corridor and suddenly burst into a soft white world where someone told her she would have to return. Later when she awoke from the operation, she knew what had happened to her couldn’t be simply explained as a dream. It was a memory which galvanized her into making the most startling changes to her life. No one could deny that what had happened to her while under the anaesthetic was nothing short of life altering!

Most have heard or read stories similar in content. Because of my work, I have volumes of stories to contribute to the so called Akashic Records. Each time a single connection is made at the collective unconscious level to the collective consciousness, the network is powerfully strengthened triggering millions of more connections. It has an exponential affect more astonishing than a simple domino one. According to Jung, it is the single most moral act a human may perform.

February 2nd was Imbolc, the mid-winter time or time of rebirth: A perfect time of year to practice utilizing the power of your right brain to listen to voice of the depths. Contemplation, reflection and meditation can be helpful tools as you consider your destiny, life purpose, and intentions. I wish you another spiritually enriched month into 2021.
